Welcome to the Year 2 class page!

Teaching Assistant: Ms Dawson

PPA Cover (Wednesday PM): Mrs A Ellison

Important information about Year 2

  • Children need to bring their book bag, reading book and a water bottle to school every day.
  • Please read with your child as regularly as possible. The more they practise, the more confident and fluent they will become. Please write in your child's reading record how they have done with their reading at home. We check children's fluency and understanding before changing books.
  • Our PE day is Wednesday. Please ensure that your child has their PE kit in school. This is a plain white t-shirt, plain blue shorts and black pumps. Please check that each item of clothing is named clearly.
  • On Fridays there is a school raffle and tuck shop. Raffle tickets cost 20p each/£1 for a strip. Tuck shop items cost 50p each.

Our Class Saint

Our Class Saint is St. Michael.

St. Michael's feast day is on the 29th September.

Our Class Prayer

As a class we thought about all the things we are thankful for. We talked about the things we want God's help with during the year. We worked together to write our class prayer.

Our Learning

Please see below for information on learning in Year 2, as well as ways to further support your child at home.

 Maths

We use White Rose Maths to support teaching in Maths. Learning is organised in clear blocks over the year.
1 Minute Maths is a fantastic free app that children can use to practise key maths facts and skills at home. It helps them develop confidence and fluency through fun activities.

8th January 2024 - Snow Day - Home Learning

Good morning, Year 2!

I hope you had a lovely break! I also hope you enjoyed the snow and are now keeping safe and warm.

Below are some activities you could do today while you are not at school. Please bring any work you do back to school - I would love to see it!

If you have any questions please send me a message on Arbor.

Kind regards,

Mrs Coombs

English

Look at the winter picture. What can you see? Make a list of nouns (people, places or things) and then choose three nouns to include in sentences.

My sentence is:

I can see a little girl pulling a red sledge.

Maths

Use the Maths app - 1 Minute Maths. This is a free app that produced by White Rose, which we use for maths lessons in school. It would be helpful to use this app to help prepare for our next maths topic. To do this, select 'Multiplication' and practise counting in 2s, 5s, 10s and 3s.

Geography

In Geography this half term we are going to be learning about the continents. You can find out what they are by listening to this song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6DSMZ8b3LE

Your challenge is the choose one of the contents and research it. Please ask an adult to help you with this.

You could find out:

  • What countries are in the continent?
  • What is the weather like?
  • What food is eaten there?
  • What animals live there?
  • What languages are spoken there?
  • Are there any famous human features? (Things that have been made by people - buildings, statues, bridges, etc.)
  • Are there any famous physical features? (Things that exist naturally - mountains, rivers, etc.)

You can present the work however you want. It could be a poster, piece of writing, model, picture or anything else you think of!

This challenge is not something that needs doing all at once. Please take your time with it as you can bring it to school any time before February half term to show everyone. Certificates and stickers will be given out for completed projects!

9th January 2024 - Snow Day - Home Learning

Good morning, Year 2!

Well done to everyone who completed work yesterday! I am looking forward to seeing it.

Here are some more activities for you to do today.

Mrs Coombs

~

English - writing

Look at your list of nouns from yesterday. Can you add an adjective to go with each noun?

For example,

a warm jumper

a snowy rooftop

a tall snowman

English - reading

Read the text to an adult or ask them to read it to you. Have a go at answering the questions. You can write them down on paper to bring to school or just talk about the answers with your adults.

Maths

Continue to practise counting in 2s, 5s, 10s and 3s  using the 1 Minute Maths app.

Science

We will be recapping our learning on materials soon. Have a look at things in your home - what material are they made from? Can you make a list of at least 5 objects in your home and the material they are made from?

10th January 2024 - Snow Day - Home Learning

Good morning, Year 2!

Well done to everyone who has been doing some learning at home - I can't wait to see it! There are some more activities for you to do today.

Fingers crossed the weather will warm up this weekend so we will be able to see you soon.

Maths

Continue to practise counting in 2s, 5s, 10s and 3s using the 1 Minute Maths App.

We will be completing some work on money soon so it would be helpful if you can recognise the different coins and notes.

English

When an action has been completed we use the past tense. Regular past tense verbs are made by adding the 'ed' suffix. Have a go at writing these regular past tense verbs and using them in sentences.

Art

Soon we will be doing a project all about birds! We will be looking at different drawing techniques and making our own sculptures.

Have a look out of your window today - can you see any birds?

Have a go at drawing a bird in its habitat. You could use the pictures to help you.
