Maths

Intent

Through the teaching of Mathematics at Our Lady of Victories, we intend to provide a curriculum which caters for the individual needs of all children and which equips them with the necessary skills and knowledge for them to experience success both now and in the years to come.

We strive to incorporate sustained levels of challenge through a variety of high-quality activities with a focus on fluency, reasoning and problem solving where mistakes are not only valued but learned from and used as a catapult for further success.

We intend to develop the inner Mathematician in all children and foster a love of numbers.

As a School of Love and Opportunity, we believe that all learning should be adapted to the needs of all children (SEN, EAL, more able, disadvantaged) and that the curriculum should be carefully planned to take account of everyone in the class so that all can succeed.

Implementation

At Our Lady of Victories, we follow the mastery approach to Maths with the expectation that the majority of pupils will move through the programmes of study at broadly the same pace with decisions based on when to progress being based on the pupils’ understanding and readiness to progress to the next stage. Pupils who grasp concepts rapidly should be challenged through being offered rich mastery and sophisticated problems before any acceleration through new content. Those who are not sufficiently fluent with earlier material should consolidate their understanding, including through additional practice, before moving.

From the earliest years of their education in Nursery and Reception, we want all children to develop a strong sense of number to provide them with the building blocks to excel in Maths and see relationships and patterns within numbers. Counting up to 5 in Nursery and up to 10 in Reception are a priority and we provide the children with frequent and varied opportunities, through play, provision and the Early Years Garden, to apply and embed their knowledge and skills in all areas of Maths.

In Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 we follow the White Rose Maths scheme which breaks down the relevant objectives of the National Curriculum and provides both the staff and children with a sequence of lessons. These sequences can be adapted where necessary depending on the needs of the children which are determined through effective questioning, well-planned activities and marking and feedback.

Impact

  • Children have a love for Maths and are engaged in their learning.
  • Children have confidence in themselves and their abilities and feel comfortable taking
    risks to further their learning.
  • The teaching of mastery maths is embedded across the school and consistent
methods and approaches are used across the school.
  • The children make good progress across the school with the number of children
working at Age-Related Expectations and at greater depth increasing.
  • The children are confident in Maths when transitioning from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage
    3.
